Submission of 31 October tax return – who does it apply to?

As we approach the Q1 halfway point of 2024, clarifying your tax obligations is essential. 

To help you navigate the 2024 tax year, we have consolidated important tax dates and deadlines to prioritise throughout the year. By keeping up with the deadlines relevant to your business, you can avoid costly penalties and stay in great legal standing.

January 2024

1 January 

31 January 

  • Deadline for online Self-Assessment tax returns for the 2023/2024 tax year — if your payment is late for the 2023/2024 tax year, you may need to pay a penalty

  • Balances for any tax for the 2023/2024 tax year are due.

  • First payments on account tax for the 2023/2024 tax year are due.

February 2024

1 February:

  • Corporation Tax due for accounting periods ending 30 April 2024.

2 February:

  • Deadline to submit Forms P46(Car) for the quarter ending on 5 January to HMRC.

5 February:

  • Employment intermediary reports due for the quarter ending on 5 January. 

7 February:

  • VAT returns and payments due for the quarter ending 31 December 2024. 

19 February:

  • CIS returns due for the month ending 5 February.

  • EPS due for the month ending 5 February.

  • PAYE, NICs, student loan, and CIS deductions due for month ending 5 February paid non-electronically. 

22 February:

  • Deadline for electronic remittance of PAYE, NICs, and CIS to HMRC.

28 February: 

  • Deadline for filing of accounts with Companies House for accounting periods ending 31 May 2024.

  • Deadline for Corporation Tax returns due for accounting periods ending 28 February 2024.

March 2024

1 March:

  • New Advisory Fuel Rates (AFR) for company-use cars. 

3 March:

  • Rail fares rise 4.9% after a freeze period between January to February. 

6 March:

  • The Spring Budget for 2024 is delivered by the Chancellor. 

7 March 2024

  • VAT returns and payments due for the accounting period ending 31 January.

22 March 2024 

  • Deadline for electronic remittance of PAYE, NICs, and CIS to HMRC.

31 March 2024 

  • Deadline for filing with Companies House for accounting periods ending 30 June 2024.

  • Corporation Tax returns due for accounting periods ended 31 March 2024.

April 2024

1 April

  • The National Living Wage increases 9.8% to £11.44 per hour. Employees aged 18 to 20 will rise from £7.49 to £8.60 per hour.

  • Corporation Tax payments due for the year ending 30 June 2024.

5 April

  • Final day of the 2023/2024 tax year. 

6 April

  • Protection from Redundancy for pregnancy and paternal leave is extended.

  • Deadline for updating employee payroll records for the 2023/2024 tax year.

  • The 2024/2025 tax year begins.

  • Dividend allowances for income tax decrease to £500.

7 April

  • VAT return submissions and online payments due for quarter ending 28 February. 

19 April

  • Deadline to submit a Full Payment Summary and Employer Payment Summary for the year ending 5 April 2024.

  • PAYE, NIC, and CIS payments by post due. 

22 April

  • PAYE, NIC, and CIS electronic payments due. 

30 April

  • Deadline for selling eligible GB-sourced motor vehicles held in Northern Ireland before 1 May 2024 under the second-hand margin scheme — for sales after this date, the full VAT is due. 

  • Corporation Tax returns due for the year ending 30 April 2024. 

May 2024

3 May

  • Printed forms P46(Car) for the quarter ending 5 April due to the HMRC.

5 May 

  • Employment intermediary’s quarterly report for 6 January to 5 April due.  

  • Deadline for 2024/2025 tax credits claiming to be backdated to 6 April. 

7 May 

  • VAT returns and payments due for the accounting period ending 31 March.

  • Annual adjustment due for March returns.

22 May 

  • Deadline for electronic remittance of PAYE, NICs and CIS to HMRC.

31 May

  • Deadline to give P60s to employees on payroll working on the last day of the tax year. 

  • Deadline for filing of accounts with Companies House for the accounting period ending 30 August. 

  • Corporation Tax returns due for accounting periods ending 31 May. 

June 2024

1 June 

  • Deadline to confirm employees’ payrolled benefit information.

7 June 

  • VAT returns and payments due for the accounting period ending 30 April.

22 June 

  • Deadline for electronic remittance of PAYE, NICs and CIS to HMRC.

30 June 

  • Deadline for filing of accounts with Companies House for accounting periods ending 30 September 2024.

  • Corporation Tax returns due for accounting periods ending 30 June 2024.

July 2024

5 July 

  • PAYE Settlement Agreements (PSAs) for the 2023/2024 tax year must be agreed with HMRC.

6 July

  • Deadline for reporting employee expenses and benefits.

  • Copies of 2023/2024 tax year P11d documents must be issued to employees and forms submitted to HMRC.

7 July 

  • VAT returns and payments due for the accounting period ending 31 May.

19 July

  • Deadline for payment of Class 1A NICs by post

22 July

  • Deadline for electronic remittance of PAYE, NICs, and CIS to HMRC

  • Deadline for Class 1A NIC owed on expenses or benefits.

31 July

  • Second payments on account tax for 2023/2024 are due. 

  • Deadline for filing of accounts with Companies House for accounting periods ending 31 October 2024.

  • Corporation Tax returns due for accounting periods ending 31 July 2024.

August 2024

1 August 

  • Taxpayers who have not paid remaining tax liabilities face a further 5% penalty, plus an additional 5% penalty for amounts outstanding as of 1 March.  

2 August 

  • Forms P46(Car) for the quarter ending 5 July to reach HMRC.

7 August

  • Next VAT returns and associated payments due for the accounting period ending 30 June. 

  • Annual adjustment due for June returns.

22 August

  • Deadline for electronic remittance of PAYE, NICs and CIS to HMRC.

31 August

  • Deadline for filing of accounts with Companies House for accounting periods ending 30 November 2024.

  • Corporation Tax returns due for accounting periods ending 31 August 2024.

September 2024

September 1

  • Corporation Tax payments due for the year ending 30 November 2024.

September 7

  • VAT return submissions and online payments for quarter ending 31 July. 

September 19

  • PAYE, NIC, and CIS postal payments due for the month ending 5 September.  

  • CIS return payments made to subcontractors in the month ending 5 September. 

September 22

  • PAYE, NIC, and CIS online payments due for the month ending 5 September.  

September 30

  • Corporation Tax returns due for year ending 30 September. 

October 2024

October 1

  • Corporation Tax payments due for year ending 31 December.

5 October

  • Deadline to notify HMRC of 2023/2024 chargeability for Self Assessments. 

7 October

  • VAT return submissions and online payments due for quarter ending 31 August. 

19 October

  • PAYE, NIC, and CIS postal payments due for the month and quarter ending 5 October.

  • PAYE settlement agreement postal payments of 2023/2024 Class 1B NIC and tax due. 

  • CIS return payments made to subcontractors for the month ending 5 October. 

22 October

  • PAYE, NIC, and CIS electronic payments due for the month and quarter ending 5 October.

31 October

  • Corporation tax returns due for the year ending 31 October

  • File your paper Self Assessment tax returns for the 2023/2024 tax year. 

November 2024

1 November

  • Corporation tax payments for the year ending 31 January 2024. 

2 November

  • P46(Car) electronic or paper submissions due for quarter ending 5 October. 

5 November

  • Employment intermediary reports due for the quarter ending 5 October.

7 November

  • VAT returns and online payments for the month or quarter ending 30 September due. 

19 November

  • PAYE, NIC, and CIS postal payments due for the month ending 5 November.

  • VAT return submissions and online payments for the month and quarter ending 31 October due. 

19 December

  • PAYE, NIC, and CIS postal payments due for the month ending 5 December.

  • CIS returns for payments made to subcontractors for the month ending 5 November.

22 December

  • PAYE, NIC, and CIS electronic payments due for the month ending 5 December.

30 December

  • Self Assessment payments for the 2023/2024 tax via the PAYE coding out online return due.

31 December

  • Corporation Tax returns due for the year ending 31 December.

Looking Ahead: January 2025

Looking ahead to next year, here are some key deadlines to keep in mind in Q4 of 2024:

  • 31 January: Balance of any tax for the 2024/2025 tax year is due

  • 31 January 2025: Online Self Assessment tax returns for 2023/2024 tax year.
